DIGITAL VIOLENCE

What is digital violence?

Digital violence is similar to both psychological violence and stalking, but differs from the others in that it only happens online. The abuse you experience will only happen digitally, but that doesn't make it any less harmful to you.

If you repeatedly experience digital abuse, it can have fatal consequences for you and your psyche and deprive you of your right to a safe and good life. Through digital harassment, you may end up doing things you don't want to do out of sheer powerlessness, and the consequences of these actions can be hard to undo.

I am a victim of digital infringement - who can help?

It's never too late to ask for help, and if you're unsure whether or not you're a victim of digital violence, Ellestedet is here to help. We offer non-binding and confidential conversations between you and one of our skilled employees. In this conversation, we will, among other things, go through the digital harassment you are experiencing and then assess what is best for you (and your children).

We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our professionals don't want to condemn you for your situation, but instead want to give you the best possible advice so you can make the choice that feels right for you. We witness women being digitally harassed every day, so you are not alone!

What is digital harassment?

Digital harassment is digital abuse that takes place on your social media, email or phone. Below, we will list a number of examples of digital harassment, which can help you assess whether you are being subjected to digital abuse, stalking or psychological violence.
Examples of digital harassment
Threats on digital media are a digital violation
If you experience daily or periodic threats to your life, your general safety or threats to share private material, it could be a sign of digital violence. These threats can come via SMS, voicemail, email or social media communication platforms such as Messenger on Facebook or Direct Message on Instagram.
Sharing nude photos is a digital violation
If you experience someone sharing intimate or private photos of you without your consent, this is digital harassment. It could be an ex-partner who has saved photos of you and is now using it vindictively to target you and your reputation.
Hacking your private devices is a digital violation
If you experience your private devices being hacked and the person, without your consent, gains access to your messages, GPS and/or other private material such as your bank account, this is a digital breach.
Monitoring your private devices is a digital violation
If you are being monitored via digital devices, it is a digital violation. For example, they may have installed an app on your phone that enables them to see where you are at all times. It is also a digital violation if, for example, they check who you are talking/writing to.
As a general rule, you should always be careful who you share what with. If you are unsure whether someone has private or intimate photos of you, seek help to clarify this.

Digital harassment is a criminal offense

According to Section 264d of the Danish Criminal Code, unauthorized disclosure of private images or information is a criminal offence. This means that, among other things, it is illegal to share information about a person:

  • Personal relationships
  • Economic conditions
  • Sexual relationships
  • Any medical conditions
  • Possible abuses

And since digital harassment is very much akin to inappropriate stalking behavior, digital harassment is equally criminalized under the same circumstances.

On January 1, 2022, stalking was made punishable under the Criminal Code. For a person to be convicted of stalking under the Penal Code, three conditions must be met:

  1. The perpetrator's behavior must be harassing, e.g. in their contact/approach, stalking or in some other way
  2. The behavior must be likely to violate the victim's privacy, e.g. by being unsafe, unpleasant or disruptive
  3. The behavior directed at the victim must be systematic and persistent. This means that the perpetrator must have committed several harassing acts over a period of time, which can be very short or long

All the circumstances of the case are included in an overall assessment, and based on this, a decision is made as to whether or not criminal proceedings can be initiated.

Last Friday, we went on a journey towards the sun in the heliotropic universe in Module 5 of the program, which is also part of the project of the same name: A natural approach to working with vulnerable people. This time, light was shed on how a positive and constructive ontology and habitus is the necessary driving force that makes it possible to work persistently, caringly and effectively in relational/social work, including with the knowledge and tools that have been in play in the previous modules. We gained insight into our thought streams, negativity bias and how to actively influence the brain to think more positively and constructively. All of this is crucial when working with other people, as well as for the work environment and, of course, your own well-being and development as an employee/person. It was intense, thought-provoking and relevant. We ended and left with the feeling of having opened up something very important, which now needs to be allowed to grow stronger and stronger. We are now looking forward to 6 months of exploring the themes from the 5 modules and slowly integrating it into our work at Ellestedet, for the benefit of our residents.Together with our partner Natur og Eksistens, we will continuously update from this process via SoMe, but if you are more curious about the program and the project it is part of, you are more than welcome to contact us. #Ellestedet #Women's Crisis Center #krisecenterfyn #naturogeksistens
