Economic violence

When money becomes a weapon

In an abusive relationship, it's not just the physical injuries that cause the most long-term pain. Economic violence is a hidden form of abuse that can have profound and devastating consequences for those who suffer it. But what is financial violence, how does it manifest and how can Ellestedet help you if you're caught in a pattern of financial control and manipulation? Read more below.

What is economic violence?

Financial violence is a form of abuse where, for example, one partner uses control of finances as a means to dominate and manipulate the other partner. It's a problem that can manifest itself in different ways and cause serious and long-lasting consequences for the victim. The signs of financial violence are:

Limited access to money
An abusive partner may deny their partner access to joint bank accounts, cash or even work to limit their financial freedom and independence.
Hidden financial abuse
The perpetrator can hide financial assets, debts or take out loans in the other partner's name without consent.
Forced financial dependency
The victim may be required to be completely financially dependent on the abuser, making it impossible for them to leave the relationship.
Threats of financial ruin
The abuser may threaten to destroy the victim's financial situation, creating fear and control.

The consequences of economic violence

Economic violence can have a number of serious consequences for victims because although it primarily involves control over financial resources, it also affects almost every aspect of the victim's life. The most significant consequences of economic violence:
Insulation
Victims of financial violence often feel isolated and dependent on their abusive partner, making it difficult to stay in touch with family and friends, seek help or leave the relationship.
Fear and stress
The constant fear of financial ruin or threats of financial harm can lead to severe stress and anxiety.
Physical health issues
Prolonged stress and anxiety can negatively affect the victim's physical health, resulting in sleep problems, digestive issues and even heart problems.
Mental health
Victims of financial violence can develop depression, low self-esteem and other mental health issues as a result of the constant control and manipulation.

Identifying financial abuse can be difficult as it is a hidden form of abuse that often begins gradually and develops over time. The warning signs are not always easy to spot, but some of the typical signs can be if you experience a constant fear of spending money on yourself and on necessary expenses such as food, shelter or medicine due to threats of financial harm or ruin.

Victims of financial violence may also find that their partner exercises control over both income and expenses, meaning that every financial decision must be dictated by the abuser. Being a victim of financial violence will often result in victims feeling afraid to ask for money or help to leave the destructive relationship.

Last Friday, we went on a journey towards the sun in the heliotropic universe in Module 5 of the program, which is also part of the project of the same name: A natural approach to working with vulnerable people. This time, light was shed on how a positive and constructive ontology and habitus is the necessary driving force that makes it possible to work persistently, caringly and effectively in relational/social work, including with the knowledge and tools that have been in play in the previous modules. We gained insight into our thought streams, negativity bias and how to actively influence the brain to think more positively and constructively. All of this is crucial when working with other people, as well as for the work environment and, of course, your own well-being and development as an employee/person. It was intense, thought-provoking and relevant. We ended and left with the feeling of having opened up something very important, which now needs to be allowed to grow stronger and stronger. We are now looking forward to 6 months of exploring the themes from the 5 modules and slowly integrating it into our work at Ellestedet, for the benefit of our residents.Together with our partner Natur og Eksistens, we will continuously update from this process via SoMe, but if you are more curious about the program and the project it is part of, you are more than welcome to contact us. #Ellestedet #Women's Crisis Center #krisecenterfyn #naturogeksistens
