Honor-related violence is a dark and complex issue that affects many communities globally. It is a type of violence that is deeply rooted in tradition, culture and social norms and particularly affects women and young girls.
Honor-related violence is a broad term that encompasses various forms of abuse and oppression carried out to protect a family's honor and uphold traditional societal norms. It includes:
Forced marriages
Social control in relationships and families
Re-education journeys
Emotional blackmail
Central to this form of violence is the concept of "honor," where the family's reputation is dependent on the behavior and conduct of family members.

On Friday we start a new cycle in the world of nature existentialism, in collaboration with the company Nature & Existence. This is with the first of 5 modules in an education that is part of a larger project of the same name - A Natural Approach to Working with Vulnerable People. The project runs until the beginning of 2025. We look forward to revisiting and diving deeper into the themes, and to our new colleagues becoming part of this process. On Friday, we will dive into the senses and their importance for our well-being, experience of the world and development.

This is what Anette said when she and her helper Rasmus stopped by Ellestedet the other day to talk about how she broke out of a mentally abusive marriage that lasted for over 50 years. Ellestedet has a special meaning for Anette because it was here that she "came to life". Here she learned to send an email, stir the cup in the way that suited her and, not least, she learned to have friends and people close to her again.
Anette comes to Ellestedet three more times during the spring and talks about her way out of psychological violence.

Last Friday, we went on a journey towards the sun in the heliotropic universe in Module 5 of the program, which is also part of the project of the same name: A natural approach to working with vulnerable people. This time, light was shed on how a positive and constructive ontology and habitus is the necessary driving force that makes it possible to work persistently, caringly and effectively in relational/social work, including with the knowledge and tools that have been in play in the previous modules. We gained insight into our thought streams, negativity bias and how to actively influence the brain to think more positively and constructively. All of this is crucial when working with other people, as well as for the work environment and, of course, your own well-being and development as an employee/person. It was intense, thought-provoking and relevant. We ended and left with the feeling of having opened up something very important, which now needs to be allowed to grow stronger and stronger.
We are now looking forward to 6 months of exploring the themes from the 5 modules and slowly integrating it into our work at Ellestedet, for the benefit of our residents.

What kind of life do you want?
At Ellestedet, we meet each woman with the belief that she has the resources to change the difficult life situation she is facing. She may need a little help to dig them out, but they are in there somewhere.
In our conversations, we focus on what she wants more of. What kind of life does she want? How can we help her see the solutions to her problems instead of dwelling on all the negative experiences from the past that no one can change anyway.
The woman is already changing her life for the better by going to the shelter. It is precisely this process that we try to support by identifying and reinforcing the moments in her life where she has actually felt competent. Maybe she was good at protecting her children from the violence. How did she get the strength to do that? Maybe she was actually able to get her children to school every morning despite the difficult circumstances. How did she manage to do that? If her self-esteem is at 2 out of 10, what is it that makes her actually at 2 and not 1?
By drawing parallels from the good experiences she has, where she has actually mastered something, to her current life situation, we can help her identify her competencies and strengths. The woman is the one who knows herself best, and therefore she often has the solution to many of her challenges.
Our theoretical foundation is the solution-focused approach, because we believe that this method is action- and future-oriented. The conversations inspire hope. It is a method that centers around the life people want rather than focusing solely on the bad things that have happened. This doesn't mean that we don't acknowledge the difficult, but we always look for what is present rather than what is missing.

A space for laughter and play
Once a week, mothers and their children have the opportunity to participate in mother/child play with a trained educator. The aim is to create a space where mom forgets for a moment that she is in crisis. She may not be fully present in her daily life and therefore not fully present with her child. Perhaps she doesn't have as much energy to play and laugh as she would like. The child, on the other hand, has an unregulated nervous system, which is affected by the mother's condition and the experiences she has had. But the desire to play is still intact.
In this room, we try to create a loving space between mother and child that strengthens their relationship. We sing, fool around and play games that the children know. The mother laughs, smiles and sees her child, who loves that she has the time and desire to play and have fun. In this way, we try to create positive experiences between mother and child during a difficult time. Moments that are so important for the child's emotional development and for their connection with each other.

Module 4 of our program - "A natural approach to working with vulnerable people" from the company Nature and Existence - was titled: Cyclical Wisdom. The day's teaching and assignments centered around the universal cyclical patterns, as well as causal chains illustrated by a model called The Web of Life. Here the common thread throughout the program was very clear, and how the different tools are parts of a coherent life view that is rooted in concrete experiences that we all have. This makes the themes of the training relevant, recognizable, viable and useful. We are excited to use these views, insights and tools in our work with the residents at Ellestedet, so that we can continue to do our best to help them on their way in life.
We are now looking forward to the 5th module entitled: Heliotropic Mindset.

It's almost impossible not to take two servings of Mick's food! Today we had spaghetti with Italian meatballs in tomato sauce. It tasted so wonderful.
Mick scores 5 out of 5 stars in the evaluations that the women fill out when they leave Ellestedet. The kids love him from the first moment they see him. He jokes and makes them laugh. Maybe they can also feel the responsibility he takes on. Fortunately, Mick is also fond of the rest of us here at Ellestedet (we don't want to get rid of him). He appreciates having freedom with responsibility. Having time for his family alongside his job. And to be in a place where he is appreciated for who he is and the care he gives us all every day through his amazing food.

Module 3 of our education - "A natural approach to working with vulnerable people" from the company @naturogeksistens Natur og Eksistens Natur og Eksistens - was entitled: Aesthetics, symbolism and narratives. The day offered both theory, talk and practical exercises inside and in nature. As always, the focus was on putting the topics into perspective from our own lives, and then looking at how they relate to our work with women and children at Ellestedet. As we were told by the trainer at the start of the program, the desire was not only to facilitate an informative process, but a formative process where we ourselves go through the topics as a prerequisite for creating real value for the people we work with. This commits us to an open, courageous and value-oriented participation, which is in line with our approach to working with the residents at Ellestedet. Today's teaching has really opened up the potential hidden in the aesthetic, symbolic and narrative, and we are very much looking forward to Module 4 entitled: Cyclical Wisdom.
